Butte Sailing Club is hosting its 1st annual Table Mountain Regatta on Saturday, October 15th at the Thermalito Forebay. The regatta is open to monohulls 22' and under. The Thermalito Forebay has a regulated (always full) water level. The short course racing (1/4 mile windward leg!) should provide for exciting mark roundings and a competitive fleet.

One design starts will be provided for the first three fleets having four boats. A fourth start will be for an open class. There will be three races in the early session, followed by an onshore break, and then two races in the afternoon. Races will be windward/leeward, triangles, or a combination of the two. The final fleet race may be to the bridge at the west end of the lake and back! Immediately after fleet racing, there will be a race in which each club will skipper a Vagabond 14; this race will be for the Richard Silvera Perpetual Trophy.

All registration is by mail using the BSC Table Mountain Entry Form.
The contact person for the regatta is Jordan; please call only between 9am and 6pm 530-321-3039.

Fees for this event follow:

  • $25      Early regatta registration per boat (Friday October 7);
    $45      Late registration per boat

  • $20      Additional dinner tickets
  • $15      Short sleeve shirt is the BSC shirt
  • $30      Long sleeve shirt is the Table Mountain Regatta shirt

  • $8       CA park vehicle entry fee
  • $5       CA park boat launch fee
  • $20     North Forebay overnight camping fee for self-contained vehicles. Other camping options.

BSC is fortunate to have a clubhouse, storage yard, and ownership of over 16 boats. The club is reforming after the COVID years and hopes that the prospect of a fall regatta on a an easily accessible lake will gather a good group of sailors. Our club is safety-oriented and the 'Y' flag requiring life jackets at all times will be flown. Note: motors are not allowed on this lake with the exception of regatta safety boats. Hope to see you there!

Butte Sailing club is located on the Thermalito Forebay North Picnic Area, just north of Oroville, CA. The Forebay is a day use area, extensive beach, and grass areas that are regularly watered and mowed. Shade trees and covered picnic sites provide relief from the sun. Picnic sites include barbecues and more picnic tables. Drinking water and water fountains are provided; flush toilet bathrooms and dressing areas are present.

The grass and beach areas are closed to dogs. The North Forebay is reserved exclusively for sailboats, canoes, paddle boards, and other non-powered boats. The North Forebay also hosts an en-route campground designed for one night stays in the parking area (or self-contained vehicles only).

BSC Boats   return to top of page or go to the BSC home page

Butte Sailing Club is fortunate to own over 16 dinghies, catamarans, and monohulls under 24 feet. the club boats are stored in a locked boat yard adjacent to the clubhouse; club members also store their boats there for a monthly fee. BSC chose the Vagabond 14 as the primary club dinghy; we own six Vagabond 14s and two Holder 14s. The Vagabond is relatively beamy (just over 6 feet) and is moderately powerful with a sail area of 110 ft2. Vagabonds are easy to right when capsized, and come up with little water in the cockpit. It has proved to be ideal for sailing lessons, casual sailing by club members, and interclub racing. The only disadvantage is a centerboard that reaches almost 4 feet below the surface; beware of running aground and accumulating lake weeds!

The club owns a variety of other boats, ranging in size from from two Lasers to a San Juan 21. Many boats have been donated to the club--members work to ensure that all are safe and sail-ready. Individuals are first cleared to sail the Vagabond 14s, and then may be checked out on other boats. Sailing a variety of dinghies is an important part of becoming a proficient sailor. Boats owned by the club and by club members are shown below.

BSC North Dock Cats at the north dock

BSC has been sailing together since 1987 as a small group of enthusiastic sailors of all ages, sailing in the North State, socializing, teaching and racing! For many years the club just met once a month for a race on Lake Oroville, the Thermalito Forebay, the Thermalito Afterbay, Black Butte Lake, and Lake Almanor. In recent years, BSC has been fortunate to find a fixed home with the Lake Oroville State Recreation Area, and the Feather River Center, located on the Thermalito North Forebay in Oroville, CA. Without the support of BSC has access to a clubhouse and boat storage yard, and provides sailing opportunities and sailing lessons in a partnership with the Feather River Center. BSC has over 40 members, owns more than fifteen boats, and has access to a clubhouse, boat ramps, and a picnic site. We are very fortunate to have this relationship with California State Parks, the Feather River Center and the Lake Oroville State Recreation area.

The Club is a comfortable place to learn about sailing, engage in spirited racing, and enjoy one another's company both on and off the water. Consider joining us at any of our club events and please consider becoming a member! We welcome guest boats and crew. The Club encourages prospective members with sailboats of all types, as well as those who may be just looking for a terrific way to spend time to come out and get on the water.
